Growing up as a black female, you feel as if you’re trying to find a place where you belong or fit into. There are times you feel like you have to question your blackness, because you didn’t fit somebody’s stereotypes or preconceptions, or you might not be dark enough or you’re too dark. You never win. Your hair is too wild for it to be deemed professional by others. Or God forbid, your curl pattern isn’t 4C and is too long for you to be black. There’s no way.
We witness young girls point out differences between each other and claim their blackness differs based on the colour of their skin, hair texture and features. RWWB, is a photo series presenting that there is nowhere else you need to be, you are who you are regardless and are right where you belong.
RWWB explores themes such as soft femininity and playfulness. These themes are usually not associated with the worlds outlook of a black girl. She’s supposed to be loud, strong and not that feminine, which is why I explore these themes.
